In contemporary painting, the human figure remains one of the most enduring subjects, yet artists continue to discover new ways of questioning what a face, a gesture, or a fragmented body can communicate. For Czech artist Tomáš Jetela, the figure is not simply an object of representation. It is a point of entry into questions of identity, emotion, memory, perception, and the complicated relationship between the individual and the world. Through expressive painting, drawing, and collage, Jetela has developed a distinctive visual language in which recognizable figures coexist with abstraction, distortion, and unexpected imagery.

Born in 1986, Jetela studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague from 2005 to 2011, working in the studios of Jiří Lindovský and Michael Rittstein. His education provided a strong foundation in painting and drawing, while his subsequent practice developed toward an increasingly personal form of figurative expression. He has also studied at Universidad Complutense de Madrid in Spain, further broadening his artistic experience.

Jetela is described on his own website as a consistent figurative painter within his generation of the Czech art scene. His style can be characterized by its expressive, raw, and authentic quality. Rather than relying on conventional portraiture, he frequently uses the human figure to convey another dimension of emotional and psychological experience. Faces, hands, bodily gestures, and fragments become important elements through which the internal world of his subjects can be suggested.

A particularly compelling characteristic of Jetela’s work is the tension between representation and disruption. His figures may initially appear familiar, but closer observation reveals layers of drawing, painted passages, collage, fragments of printed material, and altered forms. The combination allows him to introduce unexpected contexts into an otherwise recognizable composition. Painting and drawing interact with clippings from books or magazines, creating surfaces in which different visual languages meet.

This approach gives his work a sense of movement. The image does not always reveal itself immediately; instead, viewers are encouraged to move through its layers and associations. A figure may remain identifiable while simultaneously appearing fragmented or transformed. The resulting tension reflects Jetela’s interest in the psychological complexity of people and the different identities and perspectives that can coexist within an individual.

His subjects are often solitary figures. According to his biography, these characters may not have a direct connection to the artist, yet the manner in which they are depicted suggests a personal relationship with the subject. Their expressions, gestures, and physical presence create an emotional distance that is simultaneously intimate. The individual becomes both a specific character and a broader representation of human experience.

Art history also forms an important part of Jetela’s visual vocabulary. His work has been associated with echoes of artists such as Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, Francis Bacon, and Francisco Goya. These references are not simply stylistic quotations; they become part of a larger conversation about distortion, psychological intensity, expressive figuration, and the ability of painting to communicate states that extend beyond literal appearance.

Over the course of his career, Jetela has continued to explore these possibilities through a wide range of exhibitions. His solo exhibitions have included Rotten Saint at The Chemistry Gallery in Prague in 2018, Genius of the Night at The Chemistry Gallery in 2021, Magic Monsters and Ghost Riders in the Sky in Prague in 2022, Superhero in Paris in 2023, and exhibitions including The Walk of Fame, Sediments, and Et Resurrexit a Mortuis in 2024. More recent exhibitions have taken his work to Berlin and other international settings.

His exhibition history also demonstrates the breadth of his engagement with the contemporary art world. Group exhibitions have brought his work to cities including London, Miami, Munich, Shenzhen, Budapest, and Prague. In 2024, his work was included in Secret Garden at the Gallery 11 Contemporary Art Center in Shenzhen and in a Bonhams auction in Los Angeles. His international exhibition activity has continued into 2025 and 2026, including presentations in Berlin, Munich, Paris, New York, and Prague.

Recognition has accompanied this development. Jetela received the Arte emocion award in 2008 and won the Critics’ Award for Young Painting in 2013. His paintings are also represented in private collections, while his work has appeared through galleries and art platforms internationally.

Yet the significance of Jetela’s practice lies not simply in exhibition history or recognition. It is in the continuing investigation of what figurative painting can become. His paintings preserve enough of the human figure to establish a connection with the viewer, while their distortions, fragments, symbols, and layered surfaces resist a single interpretation. The result is an artistic language that remains open-ended.

Jetela’s figures can therefore be understood as more than portraits. They are psychological spaces—places where memory, identity, emotion, cultural references, and imagination overlap. Each work encourages the viewer to look beyond physical appearance and consider the stories and internal tensions that may exist beneath it.

Today, Tomáš Jetela continues to develop his position within contemporary figurative painting through an evolving combination of expressive brushwork, drawing, collage, and conceptual experimentation. His practice demonstrates that the human figure remains an extraordinarily flexible subject: capable of reflecting not only what we look like, but also what we remember, fear, imagine, conceal, and reveal.

By bringing together the traditions of figurative painting with the freedom of abstraction and collage, Jetela creates works that occupy an intriguing space between recognition and transformation. His paintings ask viewers to look again—to move beyond the first impression and discover the layers beneath the surface. In that space between the visible figure and the invisible world of human experience, Tomáš Jetela continues to build a distinctive and evolving artistic language.
