In the legal profession, true leadership is measured not only by expertise but also by the ability to guide others with clarity, compassion, and conviction. Few embody this balance as powerfully as Jennifer Duffy, known to many as “Jenn.” A trusted advisor, community leader, and advocate for fairness, she has built a reputation for navigating some of the most complex and sensitive legal matters with equal parts precision and humanity.
Jennifer is a founding partner of the Santa Barbara office of the international firm, Rimôn Law. Her civil litigation practice spans employment law, family law, and general civil litigation. In her employment law practice, she advises business owners, human resource professionals, and employees across the globe, with a focus on California. Each day, she helps clients remain compliant with the vast, interrelated, and constantly evolving labor laws that govern today’s workplaces. When disputes arise, she defends employers against claims of non-compliance and also counsels employees pursuing unpaid compensation or wrongful termination claims.
Jennifer is also a Certified Family Law Specialist by the Board of Legal Specialization of the State Bar of California. Her comprehensive family law practice includes preparing pre-nuptial agreements, advising spouses and parents before filing for divorce or parentage actions, handling matters of child custody, child and spousal support, property division, and restraining orders. With her extensive background in substance abuse issues, she brings rare depth and insight to some of the most challenging family law cases, always with the goal of guiding clients through difficult processes with dignity and respect.
A Journey Built on Determination and Purpose
Jennifer’s path into law is marked by persistence, discipline, and a genuine drive to make a difference. She began her academic journey at UCLA, graduating with a degree in political science in 1993. Determined to support herself through school, she held four jobs simultaneously, working as a writer for The Daily Bruin newspaper, a merchant teller for Wells Fargo, an associate at Express clothing store, and a class note-taker for students with disabilities. Her work ethic stood out early, with her notes even selected as the model for UCLA’s notetaker handbook.
After three years of professional experience, she entered the University of San Francisco School of Law, where she thrived as Editor-in-Chief of the U.S.F. Law Review, a Judicial Extern for California Supreme Court Justice Joyce Luther Kennard, and Vice President of the student body. She also served as the Graduate Student Representative to the university’s Board of Trustees, all while graduating as a Public Interest Law Scholar.
Jennifer passed the California bar in 1999 and quickly launched her career, first as a Certified Law Clerk with the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office, then as an associate attorney in Santa Barbara, where she began building her dual focus in employment law and family law. Her career advanced steadily, and in 2008 she became a partner at Fell, Marking, Abkin, Montgomery, Granet & Raney, LLP. By 2015, she had earned recognition as a Certified Family Law Specialist, a designation she has maintained through recertification.
When Fell Marking closed its doors in 2021, Jennifer and four colleagues joined Rimôn Law, where she is now a partner in the Santa Barbara office. Today, she is part of a global firm with more than 220 attorneys across 11 countries, continuing to serve clients with the same dedication she brought to her very first case.
Beyond her practice, Jennifer has long been deeply involved in the Santa Barbara legal community. She served more than a decade on the board of the Santa Barbara County Bar Association (“SBCBA”), where she also edited Santa Barbara Lawyer Magazine. In her role as editor, she spotlighted local nonprofits, using the publication as a platform to raise awareness of community impact work.
Her leadership with the SBCBA reached its peak in 2023, when she was elected president of the Bar Association. During her presidency, she launched a program for mental wellness in the legal profession, an initiative she considers one of her proudest contributions to the community.
The Inspiration to Practice Law
Jennifer’s interest in law traces back to her earliest years. At just five years old, she announced to her parents that she intended to become the first female president of the United States. Her parents explained that most presidents were attorneys, and that simple conversation set her on a lifelong path.
Even as she grew older and considered careers in journalism or therapy, her desire to help people during moments of crisis remained constant. Before starting law school, she ran a program in the San Francisco Bay Area that worked with 26 high schools, helping students make positive choices and avoid drugs, alcohol, and violence. The experience gave her a passion for advocating for young people and a realization that she could expand her impact through law.
Finding Her Place in Family and Employment Law
During law school, Jennifer discovered a love for employment law, which she describes as a natural fit for her love of structure and rules. After graduation, she practiced primarily in employment law but soon began working in family law as well. While the pairing is unusual, since most attorneys who dual-practice combine family law with estate planning or employment law with corporate practice, Jennifer found both areas deeply fulfilling.
Now, with more than 25 years in practice, she sees family law as her way of continuing the work she started as a young advocate for children. Although she does not directly represent children, she helps parents navigate divorce with an eye toward their children’s best interests. For her, success is not only about guiding clients through complex legal matters, but also about helping families protect their most vulnerable members during difficult transitions.
Guiding Employers and Families Through Difficult Decisions
Jennifer’s practice is centered on two distinct yet equally complex areas of law: employment law and family law. Both allow her to fulfill her purpose of helping people make sound decisions during pivotal moments in their lives.
In her employment law practice, Jennifer works primarily with employers, offering proactive guidance on the challenges they face daily. She believes in the philosophy that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” often providing advice in real time when a question or issue arises. Those short conversations, sometimes just a phone call to discuss a sensitive employee matter, can prevent long-term disputes and give her clients peace of mind.
What sets her approach apart is her effort to understand not only the legal question at hand but also the people involved. By getting to know the employee or situation in context, she tailors her advice to the unique needs of each client, making her counsel both practical and personal.
On the family law side, Jennifer’s caseload spans a wide spectrum, from high-profile matters that capture headlines to deeply personal cases involving families in financial hardship. Regardless of the circumstances, her commitment remains the same: to guide clients through one of the most difficult chapters of their lives with compassion and clarity.
Most often, her family law work involves divorce, but her practice also includes prenuptial agreements, postnuptial agreements, parentage cases involving unmarried parents, and post-divorce modifications to custody or support. As a specialist and trial attorney, she is fully equipped to represent clients in court when necessary. Still, she strives to avoid trial whenever possible, recognizing the emotional, financial, and personal toll it takes on families.
Her goal is always to move clients through the upheaval of separation to a place of strength and renewal. She often describes this transition as giving clients a “blank canvas,” a fresh start where they can decide what the next chapter of life will look like, regardless of whether they initiated the divorce or not.
Whether advising employers to help them remain compliant with California’s complex employment laws or representing parents navigating divorce, Jennifer brings the same philosophy to her work: protect her clients’ interests, minimize unnecessary conflict, and empower them to move forward with confidence.
A Global Platform with a Local Touch
Jennifer is a partner in the Santa Barbara office of Rimôn Law, an international law firm known for its innovative structure and global reach. With more than 220 attorneys across 11 countries and over 50 offices, Rimôn combines the resources of a large firm with the flexibility of a boutique practice. Its model allows attorneys to deliver highly personalized service while drawing on the deep knowledge base of a worldwide network.
When asked what sets Rimôn Law apart, Jennifer’s response is simple yet profound: it is a firm where attorneys genuinely look out for one another. Behind the impressive global reach and deep expertise lies a culture of collaboration and mutual support. For Jennifer, this culture is what makes Rimôn not just a place to practice law, but a community of professionals who care about their clients and each other.
Jennifer claims that this environment offers the best of both worlds: the ability to serve her local clients with care while being backed by the strength of an international firm. Rimôn’s commitment to diversity, collaboration, and client-focused solutions has made it a natural fit for her practice in both employment and family law.
Facing Challenges in the Legal Field
Over more than two decades in practice, Jennifer has witnessed the subtle but persistent challenges that come with implicit bias and microaggressions in the legal profession. These moments can be difficult to identify unless one has personally experienced them, but they remain a reality for many.
What makes her current role at Rimôn particularly meaningful is the culture she has found there. “We don’t just practice DEI, we are DEI,” she explains, reflecting on the firm’s genuine diversity and inclusivity. Surrounded by colleagues from different backgrounds and perspectives, she describes Rimôn as a refreshing and supportive place to continue her practice.
Contributing Beyond the Courtroom
Jennifer’s role at Rimôn extends well beyond her individual practice. About two years ago, she was invited by Managing Partner Juan Zuniga to serve on his Advisory Council, a select group of 12 attorneys who provide input and strategic guidance for the firm’s leadership. The council meets monthly, sometimes more often, and Jennifer is currently serving on the longest advisory track, with her commitment running through the end of next year.
For her, being part of the Advisory Council represents not only recognition of her contributions but also one of the greatest successes of her career. It is an opportunity to help shape the direction of a forward-thinking firm while ensuring that Rimôn continues to thrive as a place where attorneys and clients alike feel supported and valued.
A Full Life Beyond the Law
While Jennifer is deeply committed to her legal career, her life outside the courtroom is just as rich and meaningful. At the center of it all is her family. Jennifer and her husband, Tom Krueger, married in 2013 and together built a blended family of four children, who are all now adults. Her daughters, Megan and Kira, and Tom’s children, Eli and Milo, have grown up together as one family unit. “When people say there’s no manual for parenting, they’re right,” Jennifer reflects with a smile. “But there’s definitely no manual for raising four children in a blended family.”
Family is both her foundation and her greatest joy, a source of strength that fuels her work and community service.
Giving Back Through Flowers
For the past 14 years, Jennifer has dedicated most Saturdays to volunteering with Flower Empower, a program of the Dream Foundation. Each week, she joins other volunteers in creating 175 to 225 bouquets from donated flowers. These arrangements are delivered to people in hospice care, assisted living facilities, or recovering from surgery, as well as to those grieving or in need of encouragement.
Over the years, she has personally crafted more than 10,000 bouquets, earning recognition as Volunteer of the Year in 2018. Her commitment to service has also inspired her daughter, Kira, who was honored as Youth Volunteer of the Year in 2020. For Jennifer, Flower Empower is not just about flowers, it is about connection, compassion, and bringing a touch of beauty to people during their most difficult times.
Another passion that fuels Jennifer’s creativity is photography. She treasures the opportunity to capture fleeting moments and transform them into lasting images. Inspired by the words of Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange, she views photography as a way to preserve not only what is seen, but also what is felt. Each photograph, she believes, holds a piece of the stories, emotions, and experiences that shape life.
A Career Defined by Impact
Among Jennifer’s many professional achievements, one case stands out above all the rest. She represented a mother in a divorce where, during the father’s custodial time, he abducted their three sons, ages seven, ten, and twelve. Overnight, the boys vanished.
The search stretched across states, until a break led authorities to Arkansas, where the children were discovered at a Walmart at midnight without shoes. “My heart still hurts thinking about how scared those boys must have been,” Jennifer recalls. Law enforcement took them into protective custody, and the Assistant District Attorney in Santa Barbara personally flew out to bring them home. Their father was arrested, and the boys were reunited with their mother.
Jennifer counts this as the defining moment of her career. It was not only a legal victory but also a human one, restoring safety and stability to three young lives. On a very different note, she is also proud to have been recognized by Rimôn Law with the 2023 Teamwork Award. Only five attorneys receive awards each year, and for Jennifer, the recognition reflected not just her efforts but the collaborative spirit she values most.
Thriving Under Pressure
The pace of Jennifer’s work is unrelenting. With multiple clients, court deadlines, and complex issues colliding daily, she has learned to find order in the chaos. Her approach is deceptively simple: detailed, organized to-do lists tailored for each client. Every task is assigned to a specific day, allowing her to focus fully on what needs attention in the moment without carrying the weight of the entire caseload at once.
She credits much of her ability to manage this demanding schedule to her paralegal, Kimberly Litherland. The two have worked side by side for more than 20 years. “She is my right hand,” Jennifer says. “I couldn’t do what I do without her.”
Building Relationships That Last
For Jennifer, legal practice is never just about cases or files, it is about people. “I am all in,” she says. “And I do believe that all of my clients know this. I know that this is their life, not a ‘case.’”
Her dedication extends to ongoing research in child development, which she incorporates into her family law work. By understanding how children experience divorce and conflict, she helps parents make choices that minimize harm and keep their children’s well-being at the center. This depth of care fosters trust, often turning professional relationships into lasting connections.
Practicing Law with Respect and Purpose
Jennifer’s philosophy of practice is rooted in respect, respect for her clients, for opposing parties, and for the process itself. “Every person deserves respect,” she notes, “and that is something very lacking in the law today.” Even when handling contentious family matters, she believes the person on the other side is entitled to be treated with dignity.
Her focus is always on guiding clients through challenges with the least possible financial and emotional cost. This client-first approach reflects her broader outlook on life: success comes from passion, kindness, and commitment, not from chasing monetary gain.
A Commitment to Community and Connection
Beyond her individual practice, Jennifer sees herself as a mentor and community builder. She has been a member of ProVisors, a national business networking organization, since 2012 and has served as Group Leader of one of the Santa Barbara chapters since 2021. In that role, she is dedicated to connecting professionals with opportunities, fostering growth, and encouraging collaboration.
Her guiding principle is “otherness,” asking what information, introductions, or support might benefit someone else. “I feel that I was put on this earth to make people’s lives better,” she says. Whether through her legal work, her volunteer service, or her community leadership, Jennifer strives to mentor, inspire, and help wherever she can.
Looking Ahead with Gratitude
Jennifer’s goals for the future are rooted in service and perspective. She intends to continue doing meaningful work for others while cultivating a life grounded in gratitude. “I am lucky to wake up every day,” she reflects. “That is a gift, and recognizing it puts other things into perspective.”
When Jennifer is asked what guidance she would give aspiring legal professionals, her answer is simple and heartfelt: follow your heart. She recalls being admitted to a higher-ranked law school than the one she ultimately attended, but it didn’t feel right for her. Trusting her instincts, she chose the University of San Francisco School of Law, a decision she has never second-guessed. “Follow your heart and people will know you are sincere and trustworthy,” she says.
Her second piece of advice is equally clear: don’t pursue a legal career for money alone.
“You will be miserable chasing something that is never enough,” she cautions. For Jennifer, a meaningful career comes not from external rewards, but from passion, purpose, and integrity.
