At Intuitive, Dr. Gary Guthart leads the company as CEO and serves on the board of directors. Utilizing over 25 years of expertise in medicine, engineering, and administration, Dr. Guthart has been the company’s CEO and board member since 2010. Dr. Guthart oversees Intuitive’s efforts to expand the realm of surgical robots in his capacity as CEO.
As a Control Systems Analyst, Dr. Guthart joined Intuitive’s initial engineering team in 1996 and rose to the position of vice president of engineering in 1999. He was named President and Chief Operating Officer in 2006 after starting his career in 2002 as a senior vice president of product operations.
Prior to joining Intuitive, Dr. Guthart worked at the prestigious nonprofit scientific research organization SRI International as a member of the core team creating the technology that would later be used in computer-enhanced surgery. Additionally, he provided help to a NASA team that examined pilots’ human performance evaluations.
Dr. Guthart is a member of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group board as well as the Illumina board of directors. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a B.S. in engineering and the California Institute of Technology with an MS and PhD in engineering science.
