Below are highlights of the interview conducted between Fortunes Time and Cheryl McKissack Daniel:

Describe your background and what did you do before you started/joined the company?

My path to McKissack & McKissack was a blend of passion and responsibility. I earned my degree in civil engineering from Howard University and was determined to build upon the solid foundation laid by my forefathers. Before taking the helm, I worked as an engineer, gaining hands-on experience in various construction and design projects. My background uniquely positions me to understand both the technical aspects of our industry and the historical significance of our family’s legacy.

Tell us about the inception of the company. How did it all start?

McKissack & McKissack began in 1905 when my great-great-grandfather, Moses McKissack III, a formerly enslaved person, founded the company in Nashville, Tennessee. He was taught the skills of brick masonry and construction by his father, who built homes for plantation owners. That expertise was passed down through generations, creating what is now one of the oldest Black-owned design and construction firms in the United States. Our company’s inception is rooted in resilience and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

What has made you successful? What do you value?

Our success is deeply tied to perseverance, our commitment to quality, and the ability to adapt in a constantly evolving industry. I value integrity, teamwork, and inclusivity. Building lasting relationships, delivering results, and fostering a diverse workforce have been essential in driving our continued success. I also value legacy, which is why I emphasize mentoring the next generation of leaders in architecture and construction.

Which are the major services of the company and how do the company get ahead in the competition? What value-added services does the company provide?

We specialize in program management, and construction management services. What sets us apart is our history, but also our ability to deliver complex projects efficiently, on time, and on budget. We focus on quality, safety, and sustainability while ensuring our clients’ visions are realized. Our value-added services include community engagement initiatives, diversity and inclusion practices in hiring, and employing cutting-edge technology to streamline processes and enhance project outcomes.

What are the most important aspects of a company’s culture? What principles do you believe in and how do you build this culture?

At McKissack & McKissack, we build our culture around respect, collaboration, and inclusion. I believe that a diverse workforce brings diverse ideas, which are crucial to our innovation. We foster an environment where every voice matters, and we prioritize both employee well-being and professional development. Integrity and excellence are non-negotiables, and we work to build a culture that mirrors those values in everything we do.

What is the significance of innovative ideas in the company?

Innovation is essential. It drives not just our growth, but also the way we approach challenges. Whether it’s integrating new technologies in construction management or finding creative solutions to complex problems, we value forward-thinking and always encourage our teams to bring fresh ideas to the table. It’s about staying ahead of the curve in a competitive industry.

Give us your opinion on: Do organizations rely heavily on individual heroics or team processes?

While individual excellence is important, I believe that team processes are far more crucial for long-term success. At McKissack & McKissack, we rely on collaboration and shared responsibility. No single person can achieve what a strong, united team can. By building effective systems and fostering communication, we ensure that every project is a collective success.

What are your responsibilities as the CEO / Founder / President / Managing Director of the company? What is the happiest part of your daily routine?

As President and CEO, I’m responsible for setting the strategic vision for the company, ensuring the operational and financial success of our projects, and maintaining strong relationships with our clients. I also focus on mentoring emerging leaders and upholding our legacy. The happiest part of my daily routine is seeing our team’s hard work come to fruition and knowing that we are making a tangible impact, not just in the industry but in the communities we serve.

What advice would you give someone going into a leadership position for the first time?

Lead with empathy and integrity. Take the time to listen and understand the people you are leading. Also, don’t be afraid to admit when you don’t have all the answers. Surround yourself with smart people and lean on their strengths. Lastly, embrace challenges and view them as opportunities for growth and learning. Every decision you make should align with the values you hold dear.
